The British canals and canal boats are an iconic and endearing feature to the landscape and character of much of the national countryside and local geography. Originally developed and built to assist with the commercial activity of the country in the late eighteenth century, these canals and waterways became an essential tool for the development of business growth in the UK. One of the main growth areas of this time was manufacturing and the country became a focal point in the production of a wide range of goods from luxury items to everyday articles. With this massive surge in manufacturing activity, the growing needs to transport these goods became ever more apparent.
