Considering Getting A New Passport
Posted by on November 24, 2011
A travel document is required for anyone who wants to travel outside the United States. Individuals who have never had this type of travel documentation will have to apply for a expedited new passport application sometime in advance of their trip. Children, adults and teens must follow different application criterion. What follows is an explanation of the process and what documentation is required for an adult application.
When applying for the United States travel document, one of the first things to do is locate the closest acceptance facility. These facilities are typically inside a post office, library or county clerk’s office. Check with the Department of State online to locate the office that is closest to you, even trying to use an expedited child pass port service.
Several documents are required as a form of proof of identity, which include a State ID, naturalization papers, military certificate, and driver license. If you have an ID card from some other state, you will have to provide a credit card, social security card, a library card or an alternative secondary identification document. It is a good idea to make copies of the forms of identification before taking them to apply for a travel document.
Applicants must also show some proof of US citizenship when applying for the document. Documents that can be used as proof include citizenship papers, naturalization papers or a US birth certificate. A current picture is also needed for the new document. There are a number of places were the photo can be taken including some of the acceptance facilities.
When you have collected all your documents and have your photo, you are to take them to the acceptance facility or post office. Save time by locating the correct application form on the Internet, printing it and completing it before you visit the agency. The form is not to be signed before an agent instructs you to. The application is always signed in front of the agent as a witness.
An authorized agent at the acceptance agency will look over your documentation and accept your payment of the document fee. Payment in the form of a check or money order will be accepted. Periodically these fees change so make sure that you have checked by phone or on the Internet for the correct amount.
The completed application with all your documentation and pictures will then be sent to the United States Department of Sate to be processed. By paying extra for expediting the processing, you can receive your passport in about three weeks. Normal delivery of your travel document will take no less than six weeks.
