Travelling by train really is a superb way to see a country. Doing this as a family unit can be very enjoyable, but it also involves a bit of forward planning. The tips below should help those who want to make sure that travelling by train is fun for the whole family.
- It is better to try and have as few changeovers as you can because it can be very stressful to have to change trains when you have children with you. When planning your trip try to make sure that you can get a train that goes direct from one location to another or one with very few changes. Ideally you should look for a direct train with no changes.
- If you want to make sure that you and your family get to enjoy all the scenery that you will be passing then you should try to book a window seat before you travel. There can be a high demand for these seats so make sure you book the seat well in advance to avoid disappointment.
- Anyone travelling with young children should think about finding out whether priority boarding is an option. The ability to get on the train before it gets busy makes things so much easier if you are travelling with kids. It can be very difficult to supervise children in a train station as they just like to check everything out, but if you get to board early then this problem is solved. Once you are actually on the train, all you have to do is relax and wait to get going with everyone safely in their seat.
- If there is no dining car on the train you will have to take your own food so make sure you check this out before travelling. Most trains will have at least a snack cart but do check.
- Make sure you check out the different routes and choose the ones that are going to be the most scenic. This kind of route is better to keep the family entertained. The internet is a great resource for finding information about the various routes.
